イギリスでの学生生活（バーデン・タイラー）

こんにちは！私の名前はバーデン・タイラーです。全学共通教育委員会で英語を教えています。私が学生の頃、イギリスの大学で勉強していました。そこで、イギリスでの学生時代の経験について少し書き、またイギリスと日本との比較をいくつかしてみたいと思います。

イギリスと日本との大きな違いは、学生の生活環境です。日本では、両親と一緒に暮らしている学生がほとんどだと思います。イギリスでは、ほとんどの学生は親元から離れて暮らしています。私がいた大学では、一年生のほとんどがドミトリーのような学生寮に住んでいました。寮には自分の部屋、シャワー、トイレがあります。また、ほかの学生と一緒にテレビを見ることができる大きなリビングのような「コモンルーム」（談話室）もあります。さらにビール（だいたいとても弱い）を飲んだり、プールで遊んだり、ただ座っておしゃべりしたりできるバーもあります。それぞれの寮に学生が集まって交流できる場所があるため、キャンパスは夜になるとまるで町の中心部のようにとても活気に満ちていたといえます。

皆さんはハリーポッターの本を読んだこと、あるいは映画を観たことがありますか？もしあるならば、ホグワーツ魔法魔術学校の4つの寮が互いに争っていたのを知っているかと思います。それと同じように、大学の寮もスポーツで（たいてい学業ではなく）互いに競争します。私は、寮の中のラグビー、卓球、そして三つ目のフットボールチーム（寮内には三つのフットボールチームがあり、一つ目のチームが最も強く、三つ目のチームが最も弱いチームでした）のメンバーだったので、いつも試合などでプレーしていました…（たいてい負けていました！）

大学2・3年生の時にシェアハウスに引っ越しました。イギリスでは、学生のグループが一緒の家に引っ越すのが一般的です。それぞれの学生は各自の部屋をもち、リビングとバスルームを共有します。私は5人の学生と一緒に住んでいました。誰が洗い物をしなかったのかなどよく口論がありましたが、いつも誰かと一緒に過ごしていたのでとても楽しかったです。その時に友達になった何人かとは、今も連絡を取り合っています。

一番大きな違いは、学期だと思います。明星大学は2学期制で、年度の始まりは4月です。しかしイギリスではほとんどの大学が9月に始まり、3学期制となっています。悲しいことに、イギリスではほとんどの学位がたった3年でとれるので、大学生活はあまりに早く終わってしまいます。通常4年目はありません。

Student Life in the UK (Tyler Burden)

Hello! My name is Tyler Burden and I’m an English teacher in the General Education Department. When I was a student, I studied in a British university, so I decided to write a little about my experiences as a student in Britain and make a few comparisons between the UK and Japan.

One big difference between the UK and Japan is students’ living arrangements. In Japan, I think most students live with their parents. In the UK, most students live away from their parents. At my university, almost all the first-grade students, live in a hall of residence, which is a bit like a dormitory. In a hall of residence you have your own room, shower and toilet and there is a ‘common room’ which is a bit like a large living room where you can watch TV together with other students. There is also a bar where you can drink (usually very weak) beer and play pool or just sit and chat. Because each hall has such places where students gather and socialize, the campus could be very lively in the evenings almost like the center of a town.

Have you read the Harry Potter books or seen the movies? If so, you will know that the 4 houses of Hogwarts school compete against each other. Likewise, university halls of residence compete against each other in sports (but not usually academics). I was a member of the hall rugby team, table-tennis team and the 3^rd football team, so I was always playing in some sporting match or other… and usually losing!

In my second and third years I moved into  a shared house. It is common in the UK for groups of students to move into a house together. Each student has their own room and they share the living room and bathroom. I lived in a house with 5 other students. There were often arguments over who hadn’t done their washing up and so on, but it was actually a lot of fun as there was always someone to hang out with. Some of the friends I made there, I’m still in touch with today. I guess the biggest difference is the term dates. Meisei University has two semesters and the academic year starts in April. However, in the UK most universities start in September and there are three terms. Sadly, in the UK, university life finishes far too quickly as most degrees take only 3 years to complete. There is usually no fourth year.
